What Gets Measured Gets Automated

“What gets measured gets automated.” That line from Harvard Business Review made me pause and think about what is actually happening inside growth-focused teams.
Every week, I see more routine tasks quietly moving from people to software. Pipeline reviews and even parts of onboarding are now handled by tools. This shift is about making room for work that cannot be automated. The real edge comes from the skills that do not fit inside a spreadsheet. Judgment, critical thinking skills, creative problem solving, and the ability to connect ideas across teams are becoming the qualities that set top performers apart.
If your team is meeting targets but progress feels slow, it might be time to look at what you are measuring. Are those numbers still driving progress, or are they just filling up reports? The best leaders I know are always asking what matters most and making sure their teams are growing in the right ways.
Here are a few questions I use with clients:
- Which skills do we value that technology or software cannot replace?
- Where are we rewarding busywork instead of real progress?
- Are we giving people space and empowering them to use their judgment?
The future belongs to teams that know how to use data, but also know when to look beyond it.
